At 1000 Black Boys , we are dedicated to inspiring Black boys and young Black men, aged 10-25, to unleash their potential and live purposeful lives. As a Social Enterprise, our mission extends beyond events—we create opportunities for mentorship, foster meaningful connections, and work tirelessly to challenge the negative stereotypes that too often define the narrative. We believe that when Black boys thrive, society as a whole benefits.

Our events serve as transformative spaces, where young people are inspired by incredible speakers, build invaluable networks, and leave equipped with the tools they need to pursue their goals. One such attendee, Moses Ifekoya, shared his experience at our recent Entrepreneurship & Creativity Unleashed! event, and his story is a testament to the life-changing power of these gatherings.

Moses, an 18-year-old Black British student originally from Nigeria, is already carving out a path for himself as a budding entrepreneur. With a passion for creativity, he runs a graphic design business called MFX Graphic, specializing in custom greeting cards. When Moses received an invitation to attend our event, he was eager to see what he could learn and who he might meet.

“I’d been to a 1000 Black Boys event before, so I knew to expect an interactive, engaging experience,” Moses shared. And he wasn’t disappointed. From the moment Ademola, the founder of 1000 Black Boys, took the stage, Moses felt completely immersed. Ademola has a unique ability to speak directly to everyone in the audience, creating an atmosphere that feels personal and welcoming, even among strangers.

The event featured a lineup of exceptional speakers, including Henry Owusu , Tope Chiedozie , and Sipho Bowen —each a leader in their respective fields. “Hearing their insights and thought processes was invaluable,” Moses recalled. “They shared so many gems that I couldn’t write them down fast enough!”

One standout moment for Moses was his conversation with Henry Owusu, a creative industry professional whose advice left a lasting impression. When Moses asked how to build a consistent client base, Henry’s response was simple yet powerful: Get your content out there and connect with people wherever you can—it’s all about numbers. For Moses, this was a game-changing perspective, and it’s advice he’s already putting into action.

But the event wasn’t just about learning from seasoned professionals. Moses also connected with a panel of ambitious young people, including Ainsley , an aspiring TV presenter, Romeo , a 9-time award-winning author, and Zues , a multi-talented creative. These peers, though younger than Moses, offered fresh perspectives and inspired him to think bigger about his own journey. Together, they even started a WhatsApp networking group to collaborate, share ideas, and support one another.

“What stood out to me most was the sense of community,” Moses said. “We weren’t just attending an event; we were building relationships that could last a lifetime.”

Reflecting on the experience, Moses emphasized the unique value of 1000 Black Boys events:
“Even if you don’t know exactly where you’re headed, these events are a breeding ground for ideas and inspiration. The speakers offer specialist knowledge, and you never know who you might meet—someone who could help you, or someone you could help. The possibilities are endless.” For Moses, the event wasn’t just an opportunity to grow as an entrepreneur; it was a chance to contribute to a movement that challenges stereotypes and uplifts the Black community. “The media often portrays Black boys in a negative light,” he noted. “But 1000 Black Boys shows who we really are—creative, ambitious, and capable of greatness.”

As Moses continues to grow his business and pursue his dreams, he’s grateful for the experience and the connections he’s made. Take inspiration from creatives like 22-year-old British-Nigerian illustrator Kingsley Nebechi , who turned his love for bold, Afrocentric art into collaborations with brands like Nike and the BBC.

Remember, learning never stops. Invest time in improving your craft and stay open to feedback. Seek mentorship from individuals in your field or attend events where you can learn directly from experts.

You don’t need a massive budget to begin. Many successful entrepreneurs started with small, manageable steps. Take Sir Mo Farah's story as an example. While known for his athleticism, he has also leveraged his platform to create profitable opportunities in areas he’s passionate about, like fitness and youth mentorship.

If you’re into fitness, consider starting a local bootcamp in your community or offering virtual personal training sessions. If music is your thing, begin with recording and sharing covers or original pieces on platforms like TikTok or Instagram. Consistency and creativity will help you build momentum.

It’s Okay Not To Be Okay, Black Boy!

Mental health remains a sensitive issue, especially within the young Black male demographic. Yet, it's time we confront this issue head-on and create a platform where discussions about mental well-being can flourish openly and authentically. The impact of mental health extends far beyond mere emotions; it infiltrates every aspect of our lives, affecting relationships, academic performance, and professional endeavours.

Unfortunately, within the context of mental health, young Black men are frequently neglected. Studies from NLM reveal a distressing truth that Black men are significantly less likely to seek assistance for mental health concerns due to the pervasive stigma and the scarcity of culturally sensitive services. A report by Mind UK exposes the stark reality that Black individuals in the UK are four times more likely to be involuntarily detained under the Mental Health Act than their white counterparts. This statistic is not just alarming; it's a call to action for urgent and tailored mental health support.

In the face of such adversity, one of the most powerful messages we can impart is the significance of vulnerability. Contrary to popular belief, acknowledging and expressing one's struggles is not indicative of weakness; rather, it epitomises strength. Sharing one's emotions with trusted confidants—be it friends, family, or mentors—can alleviate the burden and foster a sense of much-needed support. Prominent figures like Stormzy have bravely opened up about their battles with depression, underscoring the universal nature of mental health challenges, irrespective of success or background.

Consider the poignant narrative of Akala, a revered rapper and activist, who fearlessly recounts his own encounters with anxiety. Akala's transparency not only demystifies the enigma surrounding mental health but also serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring others to seek assistance and solidarity. These narratives underscore a fundamental truth: mental health struggles transcend societal boundaries and necessitate courageous steps towards seeking aid.

Yet, accessing sustained support remains paramount. Organisations such as Black Minds Matter UK play a pivotal role by offering free, one to one, culturally relevant therapy to Black individuals, ensuring that culturally competent mental health care is readily available. Furthermore, local community groups and online platforms provide invaluable spaces for continuous support and engagement, fostering a sense of belonging and understanding.

Breaking the stigma surrounding mental health demands a unified effort. It's imperative to acknowledge that it's okay not to be okay and that seeking help signifies an act of courage and self-care. Let us unite to cultivate a community that prioritises mental well-being, where individuals feel empowered to share their experiences without fear of judgment or reproach.
